5 Signs Your Gutters Need to Be Replaced, Not Repaired
A single loose bracket or one clogged section can usually be fixed — if it’s just debris, a regular cleaning often solves it. But when the damage shows up in more than one spot, or keeps coming back after repairs, it’s a sign the gutter system itself is failing — not just one part of it.
1. Cracks or Splits Along the Seams
Older sectional gutters are joined together every 10 feet or so, and those seams are the first place leaks show up. If you’re resealing the same seams year after year, a seamless aluminum gutter — fabricated as one continuous piece — removes the problem instead of patching it repeatedly.
2. Gutters Pulling Away From the Fascia
Gutters are held to the fascia board with brackets and screws. When they start sagging or pulling away in multiple places, it usually means the fascia has water damage, the brackets have failed, or the gutter has simply carried more weight than it was designed for over the years. Re-hanging a failing system is often a short-term fix at best.
3. Rust, Peeling Paint, or Visible Corrosion
Steel and older galvanized gutters are prone to rust once the protective coating wears through. Once rust starts, it spreads — and a rusted-through gutter can’t be resealed or patched effectively. See our full aluminum vs. steel comparison for why most Chicago homes have shifted to aluminum for replacements.
4. Water Damage on the Fascia, Siding, or Foundation
If you’re seeing water stains below the gutter line, peeling paint on the siding, or damp spots near the foundation after it rains, your gutters likely stopped doing their job before the damage became visible. This is usually the clearest sign that repair has already been tried and failed.
5. The Gutters Are Simply Too Small for the Roof
Sometimes the issue isn’t damage — it’s that a 5″ gutter was installed on a roof that really needed a 6″ system. No amount of repair fixes an undersized gutter; see our guide to choosing between 5″ and 6″ gutters to figure out the right fit before replacing.
